ScummVM for MAC
Free, open-source program that runs classic graphical adventure and role-playing games on your Mac, using the data files of the original games.
ScummVM Overview
ScummVM is a program that lets you play classic graphical adventure and role-playing games on a modern Mac. It replaces the executables that shipped with those games, so titles written for long-gone systems can run on hardware they were never designed for. The project is careful to point out that it is not an emulator: it is a complete rewrite of each game's executable. You add a folder with a game's data files, and ScummVM does the rest.
The important condition is that ScummVM does not come with the commercial games themselves. You need the data files from your own copy, although the project offers a set of freeware games on its website, among them Beneath a Steel Sky, Dreamweb, Flight of the Amazon Queen and Lure of the Temptress. ScummVM is made by the ScummVM Team, is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license, and has just marked 25 years since its first public commit. Version 2026.4.0 is a large update that the team counts as 194 newly supported games and 12 new engines. The main Mac build runs on Intel and Apple Silicon with macOS 10.13 or later, and the project still offers separate builds for much older Macs. The same program also runs on Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and many other systems.
